A Battle Well Fought
Like millions around the world, I watched for 17 days as history unfolded in Egypt. One young man found his voice as he posted on Facebook what he and others were about to do. This led to a gathering in the streets that grew every day. They marched in the cities seeking dignity of life and human rights. I listened to the newscasts as they ran footage of what indicated Mr. Obama urging Mr. Mubarak to step down. However, when I chatted in MSN with a friend in Belgium she advised that the translation to the people in Egypt as subtitles indicated that Mr. Obama was putting his full support behind Mr. Mubarak. This ruffled my feathers, to say the least.
My feathers were ruffled more a few days ago when during a newscast the reporter was interviewing, via telephone, the Egyptian Ambassador to the US, Sameh Shoukry. During this interview it was stated by the reporter that the media was reporting one thing and the Ambassador was stating the opposite happened. I wasn’t too clear on everything that happened or was said, I do know I was confused.
Yesterday I was working on a project on my computer and took a breather to flip the television station. When I did there was a special news bulletin on and they were saying that Mr. Mubarak resigned. I was delighted and sat watching unable to do anything else. I thought back over the last 17 days. I remember the one thing Mr. Mubarak seemed to keep reiterating was that he was not stepping down and would die in Egypt. When ever I heard those reports I couldn’t help but think that if he continued what he was doing he surely would not resign and would die in Egypt. In fact I was looking at the real possibility of his assassination which unfortunately would have hurt the revolutionaries. Mr. Mubarak resigning and leaving Cairo was good news indeed. The special report ended and I went on-line to find more. I ended up finding a live feed of Cairo and pulled it up and listened to the silent reporters with the background music of joyous celebration from the people of Egypt. Whilst I listened to this wonderful eruption tears flowed freely down my cheeks and my pen began to write. The following is my tribute to the brave people of Egypt.
A Battle Well FoughtTrapped in a breath I sit Watching in wonder and awe. Not the outcome I envisioned, But speaking volumes Of the heart and soul I see.
Millions of humans took a stand For want of dignity and pride. Begging and pleading Decency of life to find; Needing their voice to be heard.
Beginning as a post of one liberal young Blossoming into a deluge The whole country did absorb Faith and strength has been found; As the mighty numbers soar.
In the eyes of the world Forever, this day will reign.
For infinity they will live With liberating pride to bear The identity of Egyptian.
